Jane Petit- Artist

Jane, Why do you create art?Image

It is very exciting to see something, that I had in my head

become alive in the studio.

Jane’s art advice:

Simplify  your forms and actions. Sometimes less is more.

Why do you like making out door sculpture?

I enjoy the challenge of going larger with outdoor sculpture.

What motivates you

Nature,  I  design forms and images from things that I see.

Artist Info

In the beginning, the appeal of art was the beauty of the materials, the curiosity about creating the unknown and the fun of seeing my thoughts and emotions become concrete.  It has become a powerful way for me to express my inner life.  Connecting with people is very important to me. Doing this visually is challenging and more direct than words.  It is very satisfying to share myself so openly.

For much of her career, Jane Pettit assisted people to create workplaces conducive to progress. She helped people understand themselves and realize their potential to achieve their vision. Through her art, she communicates similar themes: Express yourself. Listen.  Appreciate differences. Be generous. Enjoy.

Jane‘s art merges sculpture, mosaic and collage. She fuses disparate elements, inventing new stories of color, texture and form.  Her work integrates traditional mosaic materials with found objects and paint. She manipulates depth, texture, reflections and shadows to create art that radiates color and energy.

Jane is inspired by artists like Klimt, Tiffany, Modigliani and Soutine. The organic shapes of Art Nouveau, the use of light by Caravaggio and the Impressionists and the boldness of the Abstract Expressionists drive her to create. She marries these styles to develop her unique point of view. Her imagination produces art that often elicits “I’ve never seen anything like it!”

Her current pursuits involve breathing life into portraits and creating focal points for the garden, both representational and abstract.

She has studied contemporary mosaics at Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli in Spilimbergo, Italy and traditional methods at Koko Mosaico in Ravenna, Italy.  Her sculptural substrates are informed by Concrete Summer Camp with Sherri Warner Hunter.
